| Your body awareness is heightened by bringing together mind, body and breath. At Pilates Palm Springs we can literally teach you to be in control of your body, allowing you to handle stress more effectively and achieve relaxation more easily.
What is Pilates?
This method was named after its German developer Joseph H. Pilates (Puh-LAH-teez) it strengthens core postural muscles and aligns the body using the mind and breath in conjunction with precise, controlled movements.
How does the Pilates Method differ from other forms of exercise or movement?
Pilates is remarkably effective and medically approved. It has a holistic nature and is based upon a well-constructed philosophical foundation. Central to the Method is 'awareness of your own body' and each and every exercise is built around its eight basic principles. Specific problem-areas can be targeted by an exercise, but always in relation to the rest of one's body. At Pilates Palm Springs we have incorporated modern exercise principles including contemporary thinking about spinal rehabilitation and performance enhancement. We include our wide foundation of experience in other bodywork and exercise modalities while maintaining the integrity of the classical Pilates method.

How does it work?
By working in the deep architectural structure of the body, 'core stability' is achieved, and then maintained, through increasingly complex movement sequences.
Can anyone do it?
The Method can work for everyone, regardless of fitness level!
What if I am in pain or have an injury?
Always talk with your doctor or pain specialist before starting a new exercise routine. However, Pilates exercises can be on the floor or machine based, mat-work exercises have a great attraction in that they need no special equipment, and are still safe for those with back problems (and don't forget that 95% of the US adult population has, or has had, back pain). Its consistent success rate in solving such problems has brought it to the attention of osteopaths, chiropractors, physical therapists and homeopathic doctors.
In fact, at Pilates Palm Springs our Teachers work closely with forward-looking osteopaths, physical therapists and pain specialists who incorporate Pilates into their treatment programs.
What results can I expect?
The best description of a Pilates body is long, lean and strong. Through the prescribed exercise routines, we retrain the body to work efficiently with minimal effort and no tension. Stamina and co-ordination are improved. The body comes into perfect balance and alignment, with the result that the immune system is stimulated and the level of general health very often raises because the internal organs can now sit and function correctly. After working with the Method, a student will notice improved posture and alignment. |
